I didn’t understand this one either, and (I think) I’ve understood everything else of his I’ve read. I felt like he lost sight of what he was doing with this one, maybe. Still, I found it quite compelling up until the very end.

Immensely enjoyable. Aspects of Sydney’s sad and strange history are told with historical accuracy coloured by an insightful and tender imagination. The last few pages still resonate in my mind as including the most perfect passages ever written about Australia.

I’m not sure you’re in the minority…at least in my circles, no one likes this book.

I too thought the writing was amazing but that Lurrie is entirely unlikeable and his situation impossible to feel any sympathy for. Unlike you, my feelings weren’t neutral and I found myself seriously angry at points.

I keep meaning to read Elizabeth Costello but don’t feel like being that annoyed with a book again!

I’m so glad you liked this book! This is my absolute favourite of Ondaatje’s works for as he became more and more famous his books became less and less compelling.
