Research is the key to good historical fiction. Without it, there is only the author's imagination, and nothing is authentic. In writing The Swedish Gypsy, I referred to 57 sources, 14 of them specific to Swedish Gypsies, from the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society.

I'd like to see all sources used for historical novels listed at the end of the book, but my lawyer advised against it, saying I'd need to get permission from each source.

I'm not sure you're in the minority...at least in my circles, no one likes this book.

I too thought the writing was amazing but that Lurrie is entirely unlikeable and his situation impossible to feel any sympathy for. Unlike you, my feelings weren't neutral and I found myself seriously angry at points.

I keep meaning to read Elizabeth Costello but don't feel like being that annoyed with a book again!

I'm so glad you liked this book! This is my absolute favourite of Ondaatje's works for as he became more and more famous his books became less and less compelling.
